Fine Arts & Extra Curricular Activities
Overview - why it matters
A rich education must extend beyond the basic academic subjects, and we know that fine arts and extra-curricular activities are essential for growing well-rounded learners. At TCA, we offer a variety of enriching opportunities to challenge our students cognitively, creatively, and spiritually while opening a window into the greater world outside the classroom walls. Whether it be through music, drama, field trips, after school clubs or one of many other options, our students are empowered to discover and explore their God-given gifts and interests both during school hours and beyond.
Music is simply a part of life at TCA, and we offer a variety of opportunities for students to develop, hone, and share their abilities. Our entertaining and impressive all-school Christmas and Spring Musical Programs are a TCA tradition, but our music instruction extends beyond what our students display on stage twice a year. From weekly music/choral classes to small and large choral groups, from music theory instruction, every TCA student has a chance to experience growth and depth that only music can bring.
In addition to music, we provide our students with the time and the tools to develop artistically in diverse ways. Our biannual musical programs offer dramatic stage experience for students K-12, and our high school students may participate in other aspects of production such as set design, lighting, or sound. Art class is also on the schedule for all ages and abilities, and our students have the opportunity to experiment with diverse mediums, often with beautiful results. At TCA, we celebrate the artistic achievements of every child, and during the school year our hallways and classrooms are decorated with the students’ attractive, original handiwork.
Extra Curricular Activities
There are always new and exciting options on the schedule at TCA as we provide many specialty clubs and enhanced learning opportunities. Students of all ages look forward to the athletic excitement of Field Day as well as our annual “Gifts and Talents Night” (where everyone has an opportunity to showcase their artwork, performance abilities, or science projects). Chess Club is a popular afterschool activity even with our youngest children, and our middle and high school age students can also take part in Ski Club, Yearbook Committee, Student Government, service projects, a back-to school retreat (grades 9-12), the ACE student retreat, and a Junior/Senior formal.
We seek opportunities to engage our students in the world outside TCA, and our schedule includes quarterly field trips for all ages. Our youngest students have been to various children's museums, gone pumpkin and apple picking, and done a variety of other age appropriate activities. Our older students have participated in nature hikes along with other outdoor learning activities. They have also had the opportunity to experience educational attractions such as the Wadsworth Athenaeum, the CT Science Center, Sturbridge Village, the Boston Freedom Trail, Mystic Aquarium and Maritime Center, and the Big E.
ACE - U.S. Regional Student Convention
Every year our students ages 13 and up have the option to participate in the ACE Convention in upstate New York. This convention is open to many other private Christian schools, and it provides TCA teens with a chance to compete against students from all over New England in a wide range of activities. The list of events includes, but is not limited to, science, sports, drama, instrumental and vocal performance, photography, academic decathlon, literary competitions (poetry, essays, etc.), computer technology (web design, PowerPoint), sewing, crocheting, and dressmaking.
